Choosing the Right Aircraft for Your Charter Mission

5 min readAero JL

Three Categories, Eight Aircraft

AeroJL operates eight owner-operated aircraft across three categories: heavy jets (Gulfstream G-V and Challenger 601), midsize jets (three Learjet 60s), and light jets (two Learjet 35s and one Learjet 31). Each category exists for a reason -- matching the right aircraft to your mission saves money, increases comfort, and optimizes flight performance.

Heavy Jets: When Range and Cabin Matter

The Gulfstream G-V is AeroJL's flagship -- a true intercontinental aircraft with a 10,200 km range, seating for up to 16 passengers, and a cabin large enough (6.1m long, 2.2m wide, 1.9m tall) for productive work sessions or restful sleep on long crossings. It is the right choice for routes like Toluca to Sao Paulo (7,400 km), New York (3,400 km), or Santiago (6,700 km). The Challenger 601, with 12 passengers and 6,130 km range, bridges the gap between heavy and super-mid categories.

Midsize: The Versatile Workhorse

AeroJL's three Learjet 60 aircraft are the backbone of our domestic and cross-border operations. With room for 8 passengers, a 4,478 km range, a private lavatory, and Mach 0.81 cruise speed, the Learjet 60 handles the majority of Mexico-U.S. routes comfortably. It is the go-to for Houston, Miami, Dallas, Las Vegas, and Chicago. Having three identical aircraft means scheduling flexibility and reliable backup availability.

Light Jets: Speed and Efficiency

The Learjet 35 (two aircraft) and Learjet 31 offer the best economics for shorter routes and smaller groups. The Learjet 35's surprising 5,295 km range makes it capable of reaching many U.S. destinations, while the Learjet 31 excels on regional hops like Toluca to Morelia (35 minutes) or Guadalajara (50 minutes). Note that light jets do not have a lavatory -- an important consideration for flights over two hours.

Not sure which aircraft fits your trip? Our operations team recommends the optimal aircraft based on your route, passenger count, and luggage requirements -- at no obligation.

The Decision Framework

  • Under 2 hours, 1-7 passengers: Learjet 31 or Learjet 35 (most economical)
  • 2-4 hours, 1-8 passengers: Learjet 60 (comfort with lavatory)
  • 4-6 hours, 1-12 passengers: Challenger 601 (range with space)
  • 6+ hours or 9-16 passengers: Gulfstream G-V (intercontinental capability)
